Macomb Band Boosters Monthly Meeting
Tuesday, October 9, 2007
7:00 pm
Call to order
President Sean O'Donnell-Brown called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.
Reports
- Secretary's report – Kelly Barsi: September minutes were read by Kelly Barsi. Mr. Mattsey clarified that the $500.00 used to fund his activity account would not be reimbursed. Cindy Cavett moved to accept the minutes as corrected; Kelly Fitzgerald seconded; the report was approved.
- Treasurer's report – Becca Pettit: The report was presented by Becca Pettit. Kathleen O'Donnell-Brown moved to accept the report as presented; Beth Seaton seconded; the motion passed.
- Ways & Means chair report – Beth Seaton
- Beth Seaton reported that the committee had not yet met this year; however, a grant application has been completed and submitted by the first deadline of September 30. This grant will be re-submitted, however, to allow an opportunity for people to participate online in the community support requirement.
- Cindy Cavett suggested selling good quality, collared (polo-type) orange band shirts as a fund raiser; shirts could have a general MHS logo and be offered for sale to all MHS parents, not just band parents. Caren Bordowitz had checked prices with Gumbart's: $15.75 each for 1 dozen or $13.00 each for 2 dozen Russell Athletics 50/50 blend t-shirts (these were not the polo-type shirts.) It was suggested to also consider purchasing through Sport Zone.
- There was some discussion regarding whether to change the student band t-shirts or keep using the same color and design each year. Sean O'Donnell-Brown suggested that Ways and Means form a shirt committee.
- Jr. High School Director's report – Doug Mattsey
- Mr. Mattsey reported that the jazz band had its first full rehearsal last week with 27 kids. The sax program saxes (kids who usually play other instruments) are a strong section and there's a good percussion section, as well, with bass and electric guitars and keyboard. Their first performance will be at the Christmas concert.
- 12 students attended IMEA district auditions and did a fine job.
- Ensembles will perform for Dickens on the Square on the evening of November 30, probably at the Old Dairy if they are still willing.
- The Christmas concert is Monday, December 17.
- Mr. Mattsey purchased band books from Chad Walker for kids who could not afford them; he will be reimbursed by the Band Boosters.
- Junior high spring concert is May 15, 2008.
- Junior high, 6th grade and Jazz band will play for the Spaghetti Supper; Solo and Ensemble participants will be featured.
- High School Director's report – David Wetmore
- Mr. Wetmore reported that the entire show is now on the field! He is already planning for next year.
- At the U of I, bands will enter the field from the south end of the stadium and play to the visitors side due to major renovations being done. The parade route has changed this year due to safety measures implemented on 4th St.
- Marching season has gone extremely well, especially considering 42 seniors graduating last year.
- Friday, October 12 is Senior Recognition Night at the football game.
- Final plans are being made for the Concert Band Camp on November 16 and17.
- Chair Auditions are the evening of Wednesday, October 24.
- Macomb will be hosting the Olympic Band Festival on March 6, 2008; arrangements for food and concessions need to be made. Beth Seaton said that the Ways and Means committee will coordinate the food for the Festival.
- 20 students attended IMEA district auditions; thank you to Fred Seaton for chaperoning!
- The band directors are considering changing the way they start beginning band students. They are running about 2 weeks behind this year as 22 students did not attend summer band lessons and did not start band until the beginning of the school year, making it difficult to catch up. They may start beginning lessons in June, and hold a "refresher week" and sectionals in August before school starts. Some students cannot afford summer lessons. Changing the schedule would also give Mr. Wetmore more time to concentrate on marching band rehearsals in August.
- Marching band uniforms are to be turned in on Tuesday and Wednesday (October 16 and 17), along with $10.00 to cover the cleaning cost. Concert uniform measurements will be taken during band on those days. A signature sheet worth 100 points was sent home with students to determine if last year's uniforms still fit or new measurements are needed.
Old Business
- Chili Supper: Kathy Boocker reported that 160 adult and 66 children's tickets have been sold to date. Volunteers are still needed; Gayle Zahnle suggested making phone calls to ask for help (and she offered to help make the calls); an email will also be sent.
- The Fruit Sale is November 5—16; Coordinator Gayle Zahnle said she is ready to learn and will contact past coordinator Cindy Hare for information.
- Olympic Band Festival-We are hosting and Mr. Wetmore is setting up clinicians and schedules.
- The $10,000.00 CD investment was discussed and it was decided to invest in a 5 month CD at First State Bank.
- The Bergner's Community Day fund raiser was decided against as the coupons are only good at one location.
- Long term budget, spending and savings policy discussion was put off until after marching season.
New Business
- Muffins and juice will be provided for students on the way to the U of I competition on October 13; Burdicks are again providing trail mix and water after the parade. Kathleen O'Donnell-Brown said pennants will be available. The busses will stop at Mclean on the way home.
Sean O'Donnell-Brown extended thank yous per the agenda.
Beth Seaton moved to adjourn; Cindy Cavett seconded; the meeting adjourned at 8:26 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Kelly Barsi, Secretary
