Dear Parents and Students,
I hope that you are all having a great summer! Enclosed in this mailing is a list of all known rehearsals and performances for the 2007-2008 school year. Please make note of these dates now! This will alleviate conflicts and frustrations during the school year.
All band members will be required to purchase special shoes for marching band. Students who have shoes from past years that still fit do not need to purchase new ones. For several years a number of students expressed a concern over the shoes that we had been wearing. They complained about comfort and durability especially during parades. There is a new shoe on the market that looks to be a big improvement over the ones we are currently wearing. I am exploring the possibility of our switching to different shoes with our incoming freshmen class. We certainly wouldn't require all of our 10-12 grade students to purchase new shoes, but they would have the option to do so. We will have these shoes at the uniform distribution for all of the students to try. Please don't order new shoes until the uniform distribution day. We will make one large order for shoes and gloves at that time. Again, students who have purchased shoes over the past few years will be able to wear their old shoes if they still fit and are in good condition. The cost of the shoes will be around $35.00 for winds, and a slightly higher cost for color guard members. In addition, gloves for winds and brass will be around $2.00. In addition, all students will be required to have a drill book (a spiral bound book of note cards) that can be purchased locally and a package of Mason jar lids. Students are also required to have a pencil and flexible shoes at all rehearsals. Sandals and combat boots are not conducive to good marching.
All rehearsals and performances are mandatory. The summer rehearsals are especially important to the overall success of the marching band program. If you see a problem or a conflict in the summer rehearsal schedule, please notify me as soon as possible. We will try to be flexible, but at the same time we cannot guarantee a permanent spot in the drill to someone who has missed a large number of the summer rehearsals.
Again this year we will be ordering band t-shirts. The students will be required to wear these at the march-a-thon as well as other times during the year. We are enclosing an order form for the t-shirts with this mailing. Please fill it out right away and mail it to Gina Colley at the address found at the bottom of the form. We hope that this will eliminate any confusion and facilitate the ordering of the shirts. We would also encourage parents and friends of the band to order shirts at this time. It would be great to have band parents in these shirts at competitions and other band events!
Uniform distribution will be held on Saturday, August 18 from 12:45-3:30. As in the past, uniforms will be issued by seniority, senior thru freshmen. Each student will receive a uniform/flag outfit, hat, wooden hanger, and garment bag. We will also fit students for their concert band tuxes and black dresses at this time. We will have detailed information on the concert attire at the first day of band camp. Every student is required to return all of these items in the same condition in which they were issued. It is the student's responsibility to make sure that collar liners are laundered after each performance, that the uniforms are dry-cleaned as needed, and that all uniforms are dry-cleaned after the final performance before they are turned back in. The dry cleaning ticket must accompany all uniforms/flag dresses when they are turned in after the last performance. Failure to do so will result in the student's grades, transcripts, etc., being held until the cleaned uniform/flag dress, hat, hangar, etc, has been returned. If negligence is found in the care of any part of the uniform, the student will pay for the damaged uniform part. Failure to do so will also result in the holding of grades, transcripts, etc., until the damaged item has been paid for.
Before a school instrument is checked out to a student for the 2007-08 school year, a student must go over the instrument with Mr. Wetmore, fill out an instrument contract, and pay the $75.00 yearly rental fee. All high school students should strive to have this completed prior to June 4th. Instruments can be checked out with Mr. Wetmore on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the afternoon from 1:00-3:00 PM until June 14th. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
The music for this year's marching band show is Dvorak's New World Symphony. I am very excited about this year's show. Needless to say, I am looking forward to another exciting year! We have the potential to be truly outstanding! All it takes is hard work and determination! Have a great summer. See you on August 6th!
Sincerely,
Mr. Wetmore
